the-winter-kart-originalThe 2013 edition of the Winter Kart Show took place this past weekend in the OrrBuilding of the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield, Illinois – hosted by the Mid-State Kart Club. Kart shops and personal vendors filled the 40,000 square foot building for two days of hours, welcoming perfect weather conditions on Saturday while attendees had to battle rain, sleet, and in some cases snow during travel. This year, the show extended from one day into two for 2013, with most of the traffic coming Sunday during the swap meet hours. A number of vendors provided a wide range of products for all forms of the sport, with many leaving with new or used karts, engines, and parts for the 2013 season.

Margay Racing Products and Motorama Kart Parts were two of the busier locations on the vendor side of the show. Located just down the road in St. Louis, Margay had all there chassis models on display, ranging from the Wildcat Kid Kart to their Cadet, Junior and Senior frames. What caught the eye of most everyone was the new offset chassis for oval competition. It made its debut at the Daytona KartWeek event, with more development plans throughout the season. The Margay brand is also expanding into Canada, signing on with a new dealer in Quebec with the official announcement coming soon.

MKP lined up a large portion of the show room floor with bargain after bargain on used karts and parts from their shop in Indianapolis. In addition to the great deals they had for used products, their new Top Kart line was also on display and gained a lot of attention. Their plans for the 2013 include following the WKA Manufacturers Cup Series, the United States Pro Kart Series, the Route 66 Sprint Series and the Indy Karting Series among other events.

Franklin Motorsports, one of the most popular general kart shops in the country, was front and center when you entered the Orr Building. The Merlin importer had a number of used karts on display for any of the show attendees to load up and drive home with. Jamie Sieracki of Franklin Motorsports told EKN the new 2013 models of the Merlin chassis are in production as we speak. The LM30 is getting some material changes while the MR 980 Cadet frame is receiving some structural updates for the new season.

KartLift, the Winter Kart Show sponsor, offered their wide variety of kart stands to the show attendees. A number of them left the show owning their newest KartLift Kart Stand, along with Mid-State volunteer Kelly Dodsworth earning a KartLift WinchLift in a show raffle. Streeter Super Stands began their busy two week journey of karting shows with the Springfield event, offering their wide range of kart stands and the popular trailer accessories that were picked up over the two days of show hours.

Andrew Chase Racing (ACR) debut their new relationship with DRT Racing and the DR Racing Kart at the Winter Kart Show. A number of current customers are already planning on making the switch over to the new chassis brand after seeing the new karts on display, with Chase planning for a strong future in the industry. Also displaying the DR Kart was Florida-based TS Racing, providing attendees with their full catalog of karting parts and a look at the IAME X-30 engine. TS Racing will be supporting two drivers to this year’s IAME International Final in France later this year.

Verde Speed Resources displayed the highly successful Tony Kart chassis, winner of the 2012 EKN Constructors Championship, along with all the different OTK products. CRG Midwest was on hand to display the popular CRG chassis brand, as one of the newest dealers under the CRG-USA network. Area shops such as Kart Star Motorsports, Innovative Performance, Express Karts & Parts, Viking Karting Products and Laukaitis Racing greeted many of their familiar customers. The event host, Mid-State Kart Club, informed attendees of their 2013 plans, as did Jet Karting at Michiana Raceway Park, St. Louis Karting Association, and Concept Haulers Motor Speedway. A new street race will happen in 2013, as the Jacksonville Grand Prix will take place on May 19. Located just 30 miles west of Springfield, the event will bring together a host of drivers from the area for the inaugural street race, featuring pro classes in Clone, TaG and Yamaha.

The swap meet portion of the show had a diverse range of tables from road racing, to sprint and oval products available. Saturday night, many of the show visitors and vendors attended the Route 66 Series banquet (report here), probably one of the best banquets in the country with the production and prizes offered on the event. Russ Kemple, president of the Mid-State Kart Club, was happy with the attendance this year, although the weather on Sunday probably kept a number of people from traveling. “We had close to 1000 visitors to the show over the two days, which is not bad for the weather conditions. I’d like to thank Dr. James Logan for donating his IndyCar to the event, along with Mark Coats of Route 66 Sprint Series for scheduling his banquet at the same time. We are certainly looking forward to the Winter Kart Show in 2014.” All proceeds of the show go toward the Mid-State Kart Club track improvements for the 2013 season.
